During the first few days, the whole school took part in a poetry and art immersion project inspired by Hope is the Thing with Feathers by Emily Dickinson. Children explored the idea of hope through birds, feathers, light and colour. They experimented with different tools and surfaces, using black, white and grey alongside brighter “hope” colours, while discussing how light can emerge from darkness. The children enjoyed exploring, experimenting and making creative choices throughout their art and poetry work.
EYFS and Years 1-2 developed drawing and painting skills through the theme of birds and feathers, creating feather drawings and prints while exploring colour, contrast and emotion.
Years 3-4 produced more detailed and realistic work, using shading, tone and mixed painting techniques.
Years 5-6 created more sophisticated outcomes, combining drawing, painting, typography and mixed media. They produced detailed feather studies, incorporated words and phrases from the poem into their artwork, and created mixed-media backgrounds while analysing and evaluating their work.
